The price of a bitcoin has just plummeted by over $1,300 in little more than an hour. Having been on the slide in recent days, in large part seemingly due to new regulatory efforts to calm the enthusiastic crypto market in South Korea, chart analysis had indicated that bitcoin would recover and even return to $15,000 levels today. However, that did not happen.

The year of 2017 was a fantastic year for some Bitcoin users, but others were not so lucky with the cryptocurrency. Below, we’ll look at some of the most impressive success stories of the year, as well as the profiles of people who probably wish they’d never touched Bitcoin at all.

Bitcoin's eye-watering price surge over the past year is proving too tempting to resist despite fears that cryptocurrencies are a bubble floating towards an inevitable burst. One group for whom it holds particular appeal is African millennials, writes the BBC's Catherine Byaruhanga from Uganda.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) will clarify the tax implications of transacting in crypto-currencies like Bitcoin in either an interpretation or practice note early this year.

This comes as crypto-currencies are gaining massive traction in SA, as Bitcoin's value surged dramatically over the past couple of years.
